Is there any better feeling than sinking into a comfortable couch? Featuring deep, plush cushions, these cozy styles can provide the ideal spot for binge-watching Netflix, hosting movie marathons, or even taking a quick snooze.
To find the best ones, interior designer Melissa Hanle recommends looking for features like supportive foam and feather-filled cushions as well as an eight-way hand-tied spring system for maximum comfort. “Quality construction of the sofa base matters just as much as, or even more than, the filling in the cushions,” she tells BAZAAR. Choosing a sofa with a sturdy kiln-dried wood frame will also help ensure it lasts for ages, so you can feel even more confident about your investment.

I have to admit that I was a little nervous because I never got to actually try the couch before it was delivered, but with all the great reviews and online descriptions I was very hopeful. Well, my expectations were met and exceeded! The couch is extremely comfortable, both the cushioning and the fabric. The recliners give you great positioning, and the other adjustments let you customize to your sitting and lounging preferences. Fantastic addition to our TV/movie/sports watching room!"

There’s been several nights I’ve fallen asleep on the couch because it’s hard to get off of!"
Pros

Cons
More firm than some expected

A reviewer says: "So far, I’m very pleased with my new lilac couch. It arrived yesterday after two months of waiting (although it was on back order). The couch is super firm, but I’m hoping it’ll soften after some use. The velvet isn’t crushed, so it’s very smooth. It looks a bit shorter IRL but I didn’t measure the height and it’s not an issue to me at all. I still have to buy the other side and the ottoman, but so far I'm very happy. It looks chic."
What to look for in the most comfortable couches
- Eight-way hand-tied springs. According to Hanle, a couch's base construction is one of the most important factors in determining how comfortable the couch will be. She recommends styles with eight-way hand-tied spring systems, which “allow each spring to move independently for maximum comfort, no matter where you sit,” she says.
- Durable frame. “Look for options with with kiln-dried wood to prevent warping, twisting, and cracking,” Hanle notes. “Primary wood joints [should be] both glued and stapled, and reinforced with wood blocking to help prevent the frame from pulling apart over time.”
- Foam and feather cushions. For ultimate comfort, Hanle recommends looking for styles whose cushions have multiple layers of foam wrapped in a down/feather blend. “The layers of foam have varying compression to allow for support and structure, while the down/feather wrap provides softness and comfort,” she says.
- Proper seat and arm height. “The height of the users should be considered when choosing a sofa,” she says. “Deeper sofas are typically more comfortable, but you don’t want them so deep that one’s feet can’t touch the ground while sitting all the way against the back cushion." And when it comes to the armrests, "anything too high or low isn’t comfortable," she adds. "Often, with more contemporary styles of sofas, the arm is too low for a person’s arm to rest. The ideal seat height is 19 to 21 inches, with an arm height of 5 to 7 feet above the seat.”

What else to consider when shopping for the most comfortable couches
Have a larger space and need additional seating? Consider purchasing two comfortable couches in lieu of a classic sectional. “I prefer to use two sofas placed in an L-shape, rather than a sectional sofa,” Hanle says. “With a sectional, you only have two spots where you have a sofa arm, but with two sofas, you have four. I like having the comfort of an arm rest, and you really don’t gain more seating with a sectional than you have with the two sofas.”
