There are quite a few secret vaults and secret entrance locations in Baldur's Gate 3. All you have to do is explore and have good investigation skills, and you'll be able to spot them. The locked door at the bottom of the Toll House leads to a vault and plenty of rewards.

Updated January 26th, 2024, by Eva Csaki: Still struggling to get into the Tollhouse Vault? Maybe you failed the perception check for those traps or ran out of lockpicks. Either way, we've added instructions on an alternate way into the vault by way of secret passage.

Where Is The Toll House Key?

The key for the locked door is actually not far at all. You can use Speak With The Dead to talk to dead Toll Collectors around the Toll House for information. One of the toll collectors will tell you the location of the key.

Whether you want to indulge in speaking to the dead or not, the location of the Toll Collector Key is on the path toward Karlach, just South of the Toll House.

To get to the Toll House Key Location, head towards Karlach and, before turning right onto the bridge to her, turn left and head to the base of the wooden ladder. You will find the key on the corpse of the Toll Collector at the base of this ladder.

The Paladins within the Toll House have no business with the cellar, so they won't know much, and they won't mind you exploring.

How To Get Through The Toll House Cellar

Once you get through the locked door, there will be three traps on the ground in the next room. Successful Perception checks will reveal them for you to Disarm.

They are circular in the center of the room, so just avoid stepping on them if you can't pass the Perception check.

There is nothing in the initial room. The cell door can be lockpicked to continue through. As you continue through the cellar, there is ultimately nothing interesting other than traps and storage bins.

In the last room, there will be two thrones on the left wall. Separate party members and have two people sit on the chairs.

Alternatively, you may place heavy items on each chair.

Doing this activates the secret vault. The wall between the thrones will lower.

There is a poison trap in the vault room that will spew poison all over your party members in both rooms. Disarm the vent traps in both rooms or place something above the vents to cover them.

In the vault room, you can find the following:

Item

Description

+1 Greataxe

  • 1d12+1 Slashing
  • 1.5m range
  • No additional effects

Gloves of Heroism

  • Warding Hands: When you use your Channel Oath spells, you gain Heroism.
  • +1 to Strength saving throws.

Additional Ways Into The Vault

If you don't feel like entering the vault the hard way, are unable to pick the lock successfully, or cannot find the Toll House key, there is a secret back passage into the vault. Getting through will require some careful planning and special abilities.

To find the secret entrance, head around to the back of the Toll House. The easiest path is around the left side of the building.

Before entering the area immediately behind the building, save your game. To find the secret passage, you must successfully pass a passive Perception Check.

Once you have successfully passed the Perception Check, which is triggered upon walking to the far end of the building's backyard, you will see a newly revealed burrow hole.

To enter the Vault, you must find a way into the burrow hole. There are a few ways you can enter this small hole.

Become A Gas

The first method is to cast the spell Gaseous Form. You can do this with any character who has learned the spell or by using a spell scroll. Once you are inGaseous form, you can enter the burrow hole.

You will not be able to exit the burrow hole again unless you are in Gaseous form. You will need to either rest, replenish your spell slot, and return to cast the spell again and exit, or you will need to leave the Vault manually.

Become Smaller

A second method for entering the burrow hole is to use the spell Reduce on a halfling or gnome character. Unfortunately, no matter how many times you reduce a medium-sized character, they are unable to enter the hole. You must be either a gnome or a halfling.

Become A Small Animal

The third and final way to enter the burrow hole is to use Wild Shape to transform yourself into a spider or an animal small enough to fit through the crack.

Once you are in the burrow hole, you can continue to explore the cellar and break into the vault following the options outlined above.
