The iPhone 15 Pro Max display has rounded corners that follow a beautiful curved design, and these corners are within a standard rectangle. When measured as a standard rectangular shape, the screen is 6.69 inches diagonally (actual viewable area is less).
Thanks to its much better battery life, the iPhone 15 Plus is arguably the better phone overall, but it also costs more, and not everyone will want its larger screen. Overall though, these are very similar handsets, so if you like one you'll probably like the other too.
One of the main differentiators between the Pro and Pro Max is display size, quite obviously. The Pro Max's 6.7-inch panel gives it roughly 20% more screen estate than what the Pro's 6.1-inch unit does.
iPhone 15 models are water resistant in that they can handle minor water exposure. Although they aren't made to withstand submersion for longer than 30 minutes or depths greater than six meters, their IP68 rating ensures they are dust, water and splash resistant.
Pre-orders began on September 15, 2023, and the devices were made available to the general public on September 22, 2023. Like the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus, the 15 Pro and Pro Max replace the proprietary Lightning connector with USB-C to comply with European Union mandates.
The iPhone 15 and the iPhone 15 Pro actually share the same display size: 6.1 inches. If you want something bigger (e.g., 6.7 inches), consider getting the iPhone 15 Plus or the iPhone 15 Pro Max.
Apple says that the 6-inch iPhone 15 Pro is 187 grams, or 9% lighter than last year's model. The iPhone 15 Pro Max, with a bigger 6.7-inch screen, weighs 8% less. But in practice, it feels like an even bigger reduction. Going back to my old iPhone 14 Pro, it feels like a brick.
The iPhone 15 is the best option for most people. Besides being one of the latest models you can buy, it's a big update over the iPhone 14 in features and performance. It uses the A16 Bionic chipset and Dynamic Island feature introduced in the iPhone 14 Pro.
But you should definitely consider upgrading to the iPhone 15 Pro Max if you've been hanging on to an older edition of the iPhone, or if you're using the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, or iPhone 14 Pro and want to take advantage of the larger and more vibrant display of the Pro Max model, or its camera features.
The iPhone 15 Pro Max has been my daily driver for seven months. Seven months into using the iPhone 15 Pro Max, one of the biggest surprises -- which, unfortunately, I can confirm through personal experience -- is that it can survive drops.
As it stands, the iPhone 15 Pro has last year's 2x and 3x zoom capabilities, while the Pro Max has 2x and 5x. Both are quite good, and both reflect Apple's very reliable camera chops. One other advantage that the iPhone 15 Pro Max holds is a camera sensor with slightly larger pixels in that enhanced zoom lens.
iPhone 15 Plus vs iPhone 15 Pro Max: design and display
This has made the Pro Max fractionally (and we do mean fractionally) smaller overall at 159.9 x 76.7 x 8.3mm, to the 160.9 x 77.8 x 7.8mm iPhone 15 Plus. The iPhone 15 Pro Max is marginally heavier though, at 221g, while the iPhone 15 Plus is 201g.
The iPhone 15 Pro uses Apple's latest chip, the A17 Pro, which has one more GPU core compared to the A16 Bionic (important for gaming!) and is faster overall. The 15 Pro comes with 8GB of memory and storage options of 128GB, 256GB, 512GB or 1TB, priced at $999, $1,099, $1,299 and $1,499, respectively.
The bottom line: The iPhone 15 Pro is a worthwhile upgrade coming from the iPhone 12 Pro, but you should really only upgrade if you're starting to feel performance and battery life slowing down.
